Q&A With Jessica Young


Every so often, I ask a few questions of my favorite improvisers at iO and try to find out more about their performance journey. I’ve long admired Jessica’s ability to move a scene forward, serve her partner in that scene, be really specific about everything and always be very funny. How did you get started in improv?
My first stage experience with Improv was while I was in college at the University of Alabama. The theatre program there was “Classical Theatre Training,” meaning the closest I got to do doing comedy was playing Lady Bracknell in the Importance of Being Ernest. I was dying to break away from that and a group of us in the theatre department started something called Guerilla Theatre. It was twice a month late at midnight on Fridays. Any one from campus could sign up for 5 minutes of stage time to do whatever you wanted. It was my savior. Through this venue, I could try out sketches, monologues and improv for the first time in front of a real audience.
