Funny. But Great?

I think many improvisers are considered GREAT improvisers because they are funny.
But they are not.
Pretty strong words, huh?
Here is my thinking on this subject.
Improv, unlike stand-up or other forms of comedy, is not just about being funny.
Yes, that is a central component, and I love to laugh as much as the next person, but I don’t think that because someone is funny, makes them a great improviser.
